Parallel Programming for Bioinformatics

Wintersemester 2008/2009

24. 02. 2009: First lecture
The first lecture will be given on the 2nd of March in CIP pool 1.04. It will start at 9.15 a.m.

24. 02. 2009: Assignments
The assignments should be solved in groups of two. Larger groups are not allowed.

Solutions for exercises
All solutions are to be submitted via eMail to Jan Fuhrmann.
Solutions are to be handed in until 8.00 p.m. of the same day. Solutions handed in later will not be taken into account.

Lecturer: Dr. Dirk Neumann
Tutors: Jan Fuhrmann, Benny Kneissl

Teilgebiet: Special lecture in Bioinformatics (Master in Bioinformatics)

Requirements: C++-programming, valid login on computers in CIP pool

Requirements for participating in the examination:

  • 50% of the points of all exercises
Condition for certification:
  • 50% of the points in the final examination.
Overview:
The main focus is algorithms in Bioinformatics and the possible parallel implementation thereof. Three different approaches to parallel computing will be presented and used both in hand-on exercises and assignments.

Goal:
A basic understanding of the problems of parallelizing algorithms and to enable students to use parallel programming in follow-up courses.
